Diversity Experiences
Peru - Spring 2016After completing ten weeks of student teaching at the Light of Christ Catholic School of Excellence Academy, I traveled to Lima, Peru for an additional five weeks teaching English to students at the Colegio María Auxiliadora. Aside from teaching, I became totally emerged in a completely different culture. This experience fostered growth in ways I never thought possible, allowing me to become not only a better Social Studies teacher, but a better person as well.

Working for Pride INC.
In April, I was hired as a youth mentor at Pride INC., an organization developed to directly impact the lives of people with disabilities in the Bismarck-Mandan Area. Through my job at Pride, I provide direct support to children with mild, moderate, and severe mental disabilities. Each day, I am on the frontlines, helping these young people live and thrive despite their disability. My time at Pride has shown me that there are many disabilities that children are facing. It has also shown me how important it is to treat all of my students with respect and dignity, especially those who have a disability.

Study Abroad in Rome
In the summer of 2014, I was blessed to spend five weeks living in Rome, Italy. While in Rome, I was completely immersed in a new and exciting culture. It did not take me long to realize that I was the outsider. I can remember exactly how I felt the first time I was alone in Rome, with no clue where I was going, and no one who spoke my language was around to help. I was lost, but I was not scared. This was a new adventure, and I was up to the challenge.
As an educator, I realize that every student in my class comes from a different background. I also realize that all of my students are equal, and they must be treated as such. My classroom will be a microcosm of the world, and every student will feel comfortable within my class. In my class, it does not matter where you come from, or what your past is. In my class, you are all equal. |
No Excuses University
No Excuses University of a national program that pairs at-risk youth with college students around the country in hopes of encouraging them to stay in school and realize that everyone has the ability to go to college. The Junior ELA class at UMary participates in this program and has been paired with Mrs. Sara Lambrecht's 3rd grade classroom in Shepherd, Montana. I was in charge of our correspondence with the 3rd graders, organizing bi-weekly pen pal letters and multiple Skype sessions, all with the hopes of showing these 3rd graders what college is really like and encouraging them to stay focused on school. The project culminated by visiting Mrs. Lambrecht's classroom and meeting with the students we were mentoring.
Through No Excuses University I learned that true leadership means doing my part in making the world a better place. What we did with these students didn't always seem like much, but to these kids, it meant the world.
